Went for a nice lunch time drive, then noticed lots of coolant at the edges of the timing belt covers. Time to open it up less than 500mi after installing new timing belt and water pump...ugh. no noticeable leaks while parked, hoping it's just a loose bolt

My NB has been in the paint shop since early January. Finally got it back and put back together. Updated to an NB2 front bumper/headlights as part of the project, and it got new wheels. Pretty happy with the results. :D

Not my best day, nor the Miata’s. I’ve been battling an off and on P0300 code for a couple of months and just about a week ago suffered a significant loss of power under all conditions but no CEL. So far, I’ve replaced the coil packs, spark plugs and wires and swapped the cam position sensor for one that was known to be working when pulled. No joy. Yesterday I removed and cleaned a very grungy (although didn’t smell like teen spirit) crank position sensor and carefully re-gapped it. No better. So I switched in my spare – again used but working when pulled. No better. Next step was replacing the fuel filter – and despite hearing some horror stories about golden gasoline showers, it went smoothly. The car started right away, but ran rough for a few seconds while the system re-pressurized so I revved it a few times until it settled down. I went to test drive and got 10 feet out of my driveway and it stalled. Repeated crankings would not re-start it so my son and I pushed it back into the driveway. One of the things that I checked was the wiring routing on the Crank Sensor and when I wiggled it, it caused a clicking from the coil packs. That didn’t seem right to me so I went to swap the other CPS back in and snapped the head off the mounting bolt. Argh! I *think* there might be enough threads sticking out to grab with vice grips, at least that’s what I’m hoping. At any rate, I was quite done for the day. I have an appointment to replace a cracked windshield on Tuesday that I guess I will have to cancel, I need to get it inspected by the end of the month. Oh and today it’s snowing. (Sounds like there might be a good blues song somewhere in there.)

Get someone to weld you a nice nut on the stud.
That way you can back stud out.
But you need a GOOD weld

Thanks Marksman! I put a small weld bead on the end of the stud and it was enough to grab the remains and back it out. A quick swap of crank sensors and the car fired right up! Still WAY down on power but that beats no start. At least I can drive it to the shop if I can't figure it out on my own.

Over the weekend, I was finally able to figure out how to change out the motors on both windows. I had to dig pretty hard to learn how to sequence everything to get the cables wound up correctly and routed the right way on the regulators. Got both windows working and replaced their bushings with delrin ones. I highly recommend, as my windows move up and down much more quickly than they ever did, now.
Time to do something about my ratty door cards, now. Might get the "forever" ones on eBay, but I need to keep researching.

I let the car cool off. Then I drived the two miles to pick up the belt. I will change the belt tomorrow, it will be warmer tomorrow.

Yesterday I got around to finally installing my Blackbird Fabworx hard pipe for my Supermiata coolant reroute. Used the silicone hose Supermiata supplied and shortened it and installed the s-hose and cut it to fit at the radiator. Found a bracket in my shop and then cut and bent it to work with the supplied clamp from Blackbird. Attached it to the intake manifold and it works perfectly for the test fit. Then painted it to make it look a little better. After that, I decided that the factory manifold heat shield was also looking sub par so painted that for fun and to make that area look better. Before I left yesterday, I stripped off all of the crappy paint that my detailed sprayed on the JDM cubby I had made locally and then I puttied in the small pits that it had. Today I put the bracket and heat shield back on along with my strut bar and radiator brackets. Now I only have to add some coolant and get it started.

I had thought about doing the red M logo like yours, but with the Twilight Blue Mica that mine is, and with the Advanti Storm wheels I went with the Mazda Eunos logo for mine. Adam does a fantastic job.

oh hey I just ordered those same tires in 205/45-16 to put on some 16x7 Rota wheels I've had in the garage for years. I used to run them on my Integra, and I might still swap them back and forth as I feel like it.
On Saturday I installed those 16" wheels, still with the current 9 year old tires on them (sitting on shelf past ~4 years), just to see how they fit with my current suspension height. Drove down to the gas station, and realized quickly that 9 year old tires on a RWD car will get sideways VERY, VERY easily. I went around a corner at a traffic light, applied throttle a little too early, and ended up sideways in the middle of the street. Thankfully no other traffic was around and I continued on, very carefully. Came right back home and swapped back to the Miata wheels.

@kallsop: You can swap the odometer from your original cluster.
Sadly, some dumb a$$ car owner didn't ask for the old gauge cluster, and the shop didn't think about changing the odo from the old to the new/used one in 2012 when the work was done. When I picked the car up, the old cluster was gone. I've learned a bit since then.

I tiny job but it pleased me. From 15 March here in Ontario, there will be no more tax stickers for cars (and no more paying for them) - Woo Hoo! (Hey, they'll get us some other way for sure!). So I gleefully removed the tax sticker from the licence plate. For any other Ontarians, it is very easy, just use a hair dryer to heat the sticker up and gently scrape a corner back with your fingernail, once you have purchase, grasp or use tweezers to grasp the corner and gently peel back while still using the hair dryer, it should come off nicely in one piece.

I took my valve cover off yesterday for a reason not germane to this post. While it was off I cleaned the PCV valve. After I put the cover back on, I went to reinstall the PCV valve and the hose clamp had fallen off and disappeared. Uh oh, what if it fell in the cylinder head when the valve cover was being lifted off. I briefly started the engine and heard no metallic clang of hose clamps being flung around by cams like a beach ball at a rock concert so that was hopeful. But I decided that I really had to look and see so today it was off with the valve cover again (it went a LOT faster the second time). No hose clamp in there.
I had also lost the gasket for the EGR tube to the EGR valve and bought a new one at the dealer (none of the parts stores seemed to carry it and I didnt want to wait and pay shipping for an internet order). $20!!! for the little thing! Guess Ill be more careful next time about dropping it. Somewhere in the depths of my engine is a gasket and a hose clamp that may never be found.

I did something similar to Rodan last year. My MSM came with a set of Konig Feather 16x7 rims and the Crown logo was starting to show it's age. I found an emblem seller on eBay that had quite a few nice, rounded emblems but not the correct size. They were happy to make them to fit my center caps and made a listing. Quite inexpensive and they haven't shown any UV degradation. If I order another set I'll ask for a solid background color instead of the striped, almost carbon fiber look. Silver, Gray, or Red would have looked better.

I once came out of a store walking far out in the parking lot (dent avoidance spot) to find a lifted, dually truck parked nearby. I'm 6'2" - 6'3" and they had just driven past. They got out laughing asking if it was a toy kit car. I just smiled and said "Mazda Miata!" as I got in.
Now I have the pleasure of saying Mazdaspeed MX-5 and with the GT2560R turbo pushing 12 psi, it's no slouch. Amusingly, I recently learned the 1995 Escort GT that I turbocharged, running on piggyback timing/fuel computers, was slightly faster than a stock MSM according to magazine tests.

Living that close, you might should extend the drive a few more miles to ensure the engine oil gets up to temp and fully burns off any condensation or other moisture. If it doesn't ever have a chance to do that on short trips, you can end up with sludge issues.

qDidn't think it was worth making a thread over this, but I pretty recently installed an aluminium radiator I bought off a local Miata "guy". Installed it, ran it for a few days with no problems and today as I was exiting the drive through I heard a loud pop.
I get home, and it appears that the upper radiator hose clamp had failed. No big deal, I put another one on. I filled the car up with coolant and ran it with the cap off for a good long while and noticed that it kept smoking. At first I thought it was just coolant evaporating (since the hose blowing off shot coolant everywhere) but it didn't stop. The temp gauge didn't react, but I then noticed that I suddenly lost coolant after idling for a bit, and that the heat inside the car was ABSURDLY hot (like, physically painful).
Figured at this point something was wrong and shut the car off. Looked underneath the car and saw this. Did I get sold a bum/leaky radiator? Of course coolant went everywhere earlier so this could just be residual (I hosed it off so I can check if it leaks later) I got it for....sorta cheap so while I'm not too mad it's done more to solidify my view that I shouldn't trust anyone, but more importantly, is the car going to be fine? I ran the car for about 40 minutes (quite foolishly) before I realized that maybe the car wasn't just evaporating the spilled coolant. Oddly enough, I the last couple of days I was driving around there were no signs whatsoever that the radiator had any issues.
I guess that is what I spent my night doing to my Miata lol...
So many problems with this stupid car...the old radiator is about 8-10 years old (service records say so) and a bit faded so I will put it back in to be on the safe side but now I'm kinda bummed.....
Will a TYC OEM off Amazon be good enough for a future forced induction build? I plan on turbo'ing the car when I graduate college, which is why I bought this dumb aluminium unit.

Will a TYC OEM off Amazon be good enough for a future forced induction build?
In a word, no.
The TYC is a fine stock replacement, but you should invest in a better radiator for forced induction. Several of the site vendors have good options.
You should also install a re-route to improve the efficiency of the cooling system.

You might not bike during winter here in Minnesnowta. Most of my trek would be on sidewalks as there's NO way I'm risking my life riding on a 40-45 mph, four lane road where you can't see lane markers due to snow, in the dark on ice/snow each winter. Not to mention it's still often below zero temperature and those -10F to -20F plus wind chill days suck! I used to bike 8 miles to work, walk 10+ miles as a USPS Letter Carrier, and bike home but it took too much time. Once Spring arrives I will be riding in as my bad shoulder and elbow allows.
I occasionally take a longer route home to get some heat into the engine. Then it's 8-10 miles including some highway and once or twice a week I drive further out for groceries. Both for the engine as well as it being a wealthier area with better chances of meeting single woman. Alas, only one has approached me to chat, most rush in/out now due to Covid and barely respond to any comment.

Today I installed the MiataRoadster 6 speed short shifter in my 02 LS. It took longer to install than it should have, but that was on me. The directions were clear, everything was included in the kit, and the parts, instructions, and diagram were all top notch. The kit was expensive, but I got the military/first responder discount (maybe they know I'm a nurse?), and when you suubtract the cost of a complete shifter rebuild it stings a little less. The new shifter is incredible, from sloppy and difficult to get into gear to the proverbial rifle bolt. I wish I'd taken measurements and pictures, but I didn't think of it. I can't tell you how much shorter the shifts are, but it feels like I've gone from shifting with my wrist to with my fingers. I am impressed and would buy it again if another six speed found it's way into my life.
Oh, and I took a top down drive on a sunny day to my travel assignment. Dropping the top in the morning after a long night shift sure does feel good. :)

Did you notice an increase in muscle required to shift with the MR shifter? Because I definitely do. It's a little easier with a taller shift knob, or I suppose with the 4" taller shifter. I went with stock height in mine. I recently re-installed my MR shifter after having gone back to stock for awhile, but this time I put it in with an OEM Mazda shift bushing on the bottom. The bronze and delrin options for the MR shifter in my car were just too difficult to shift, and made it way too easy to mis-shift or even money$hift.

^^^ Either do a longer knob, or get somewhere between a 3-4" extension. I've got a 2" spherical knob with a 3.5" extension. I can't remember what the short shifter was in reference to stock, but the extension puts the knob ~2" over stock.

It definitely requires more effort to move the lever, and more precision to get the right gear. That being said, at this point I'm attributing missed or incorrect gear selections to myself, as I need to build new muscle memory for the shift pattern.
As for extensions and tall knobs, the directions specifically advise against them, going so far as to say "use any non-dild* knob of your choice." I don't know if it's an effort to sell more tall levers or if there have been problems with the added leverage on the stock height shifter, but with as well as the kit was built, and the maker's reputation for the last 10+ years, I imagine there's a reason.

Filled and bleed my coolant for my Supermiata Qmax Reroute. I'm pretty sure when I had my cluster apart I didn't set the needles correctly since the temp gauge moves up a little and then that's it. I'm going to test it with the cluster I have at home to see if the temperature changes. Finally got rid of that annoying squeal. Fully tightened my belts to where they were previously. Since you have the taller shifter it likely won't be an issue for you. I went with the stock height MR shifter as I just hate the look of super-tall shifters. But with stock shift knob and bronze bushing, it was just ridiculously hard to shift. Couldn't shift fast at all, at least not with a ton of effort.
I'm currently using the MR shifter with the OEM bushing (installed a brand new one), and a JSP delrin shift knob that's probably 1 inch taller than stock at the very top. So far I'm liking that setup.

I'm fairly confident the issue was the brass bushing which was made to be used with a stock shifter. The MR has a different design, notice the difference in the MR delrin bushing(for 5spd, 6spd is different) and a Beatrush brass bushing:
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b261/superhonda02/97%20M%20Edition/parts%20bought%20and%20sold/IMG_1731_zpsawvyiwzi.jpg (http://s21.photobucket.com/user/superhonda02/media/97%20M%20Edition/parts%20bought%20and%20sold/IMG_1731_zpsawvyiwzi.jpg.html)
I couldn't tell much of a difference other than a increase in effort and not in a good way. Switched back to the MR delrin bushing and noticed the difference immediately. I contacted Bill at MR later and asked about it and he confirmed the difference in design.
You are literally the only person I've heard complain(I'm sure there are others) about the MR having too much resistance, it definitely was more than stock but that's kind of the point...less deflection means a more precise shift but also increased resistance. Can't have one without the other.

Bought a set of tires, then drove to Florida. It rained pretty much the whole way, but the new tires were perfect.
I went with Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 Plus. More interestingly, I went with 205/50ZR16. The factory tire is a 45 series, but, as my speedometer was slightly fast, and, as I didn't like how small they looked in the wheel wells, and, as the 45s were difficult to find, I went with the 50 series.
Speedometer reads perfectly correct now. The tires are much quieter than the ones they replaced, they felt great, too.

The bushings are still interchangeable despite slight design differences. I'm using an OEM Mazda bushing currently on my MR shifter.
Yeah I expected an increase in effort, but not so much that it caused me to miss shifts and very nearly money shift on 3 separate occasions, when shifting at high RPM.

I'll third that opinion. My 99 came with them when I bought it and I've also had traction issues with them in the wet as well, not even heavy rain just light mist and condensation. I'll eventually order some conti's ECS's when I switch over to the advanti storm's.

Never had an issue with the Voodoo Magnum getting hot, but it's also aluminum(and way too big for me). Definitely worth a try if you have smaller hands and want a weighted knob. Plus all the climate controls are still easy enough to reach with the extension and ball, unlike a tall teardrop(which I tried and immediately returned).

nice, although for some reason the ibb.co pics are blocked at my office. Had to look at my phone to see them.
I went with what I guess is a "teardrop" shift knob, from JSP Fab. The top is basically spherical, but then is elongated to make the knob about an 1 to 1.5" taller than the stock shift knob. I'm loving it so far. Way easier to grip that 1-2 and 3-4 upshift than the dinky stock knob.

I originally tried a 1320 Performance teardrop, but I hated how it felt and got in the way of the climate controls. I thought I'd hate how an extension would look, so that's why I tried the teardrop first. The stock knob is ok for my smöl hands, but I prefer a sphere I can get my hand around comfortably *insert lesbian joke here*. Since I'm so light handed the extra weight and height is nice though, really adds some leverage to my old lady driving. :p

I got Ridies in black leather with mid-grey inserts and no special stitching or piping. With hindsight, I wish I had gotten the inserts 'perforated'.

I think for full leather upholstery it is reasonably priced. Most places I looked were $800 and higher for leather. LSeat was cheaper but they use leather front and the rest is vinyl. They offer full leather but then its almost as much as Ridies. Yes I had a good experience with Ridies, I had them send me samples and then they reached out to me through email to ask if I had any questions. I responded but still didn't buy. I went back on their website a couple months later and the next day someone called me and left a message to call them back if I had any questions. I called him, he answered my questions and I ordered. I paid $50 for expedited order, I ordered on 2/22 and they were delivered on 3/11. I Installed this weekend and I'm very happy with the result. The stock leather is seating area only the rest is vinyl or cloth, these are much better quality than stock. I added seat heaters as well, but I haven't wired them up yet.

Yeah I'm right there with you. My stock seats are pretty worn out and the foam is sad. I've thought about rebuilding them but one of the main things that is stopping me is that I hate vinyl or leather seats and I haven't been able to find any new clothe or microsuede covers either. I could take the stock covers apart and copy the pattern in new material but I'm not really motivated to do all that work.

This is one major reason I see no point in buying new seat covers/skins for 20+ yr old seats. To be "like new" they new foam as well. I don't think NA/NB seats are comfortable for anything beyond an hour or so of driving but I have a messed up back so I'm probably more sensitive to it.

I find the '04-05 NB2 cloth seats to be comfortable and supportive at least, despite my fibromyalgia, as you just sink into the seat fabric for the foam to cradle you. Though they were clearly not designed for women with wide hips, as it's a bit snug there for me, but what sport seat is? At least it's not painfully snug like my brother's 335i.

Yep, they fitted really well. With hindsight, I perhaps should have glued an additional half inch of foam around the bottom of the seats (back foam was fine).

When I did Timing Belt/Water Pump/exhintake a few months back I went with an aftermarket thermostat. Well, 1k miles later the car overheated. No damage done. Today I installed an OEM thermostat and went ahead and replaced the radiator cap with OEM as well just for good measure. Runs like a champ again.
I went with a Stant thermostat at first as I've had good experience with them in the past. Lesson learned on Miatas. Luckily, I was only a mile from the house and halfway back it unstuck itself and my temp gauge snapped back to normal.

I installed LED lamps from Flyin' Miata. Brakes, markers, and turn signals. I of course I didn't fully read the FM literature before I ordered and purchased the switchback turn signals. I always drive with my parking lights on and liked the idea of my front directionals working like daytime running lights, switchbacks are white when on and turn amber when blinking. FM does not recommend them on NB1s because they have an amber lens where NB2s have a clear lens. So I ran with them anyway and like the results. I now have yellow lights when on that go to amber when blinking. The whole idea of the LEDs is to make the car more noticeable as they are much brighter. I like the yellow running lights (think yellow fog lights) because it is a color that you do often see on the road and I think the car stands out a bit more. I tried to take pictures but the colors just don't come through. Turned out to be a happy mistake.

I watched a couple of youtube videos but basically I used a wide attachment on the steamer and pushed it right on the foam 3 or so seconds and let it push the steam in, you can see the foam expand, then moved section by section. Then I let the foam sit out in the sun for an hour or two to dry.

Finally got around to testing my coolant temp sensor wire mod for my QMax reroute. I’m happy to say it worked. After that, washed my car. I think it’s the first time in two years. Put my bleeder valve back in there also. The wonderful, cheap set of tiny 1/4” SAE sockets that I bought worked great up until the actual 1/4” socket for the reroute bleeder valve is now stuck on there. Still waiting on my four pack of bleeder valves for my reroute from eBay. Going to change the oil and fill the gas tank on Monday.

I’ve changed oil on a bunch of cars over the years. The Miata is definitely the hardest. It’s the only car I’ve ever removed a wheel to reach the oil filter. It’s even harder than my Integra where I have to get all the way up underneath the engine to reach up between the engine and firewall to get to the filter. Even that is easier and less messy (slightly less) than the Miata filter.

The car looks great. He was able to remove some oxidation I'd had trouble with, and every nook and cranny is clean. I'd installed some LED low beams back in the fall and they were much brighter, but with the newly polished headlights it's literally night and day. It doesn't look like a new car, but if it didn't have the knicks and dings of twenty years, it would. I'll try to get some pictures.

P.S.- The car had a Monsterflow intake when I bought it and he polished the intake tube! :p

Sunday I drove all of the sports cars at my disposal - the NB, the MG, and the Z. It occurred to me that it's the first time I've driven them all on the same day. If I could only keep one, it would have to be the NB. It just does everything better. It's my favorite car ever. But the vintage driving experience of the MG speaks to me. The Z? It was my son's car and he signed it over to me when he moved and couldn't take it with him. I do enjoy driving it. To a certain extent. But it's just not my cup of tea. Time to find a buyer who appreciates it.

Been trying to fix the malfunctioning speedo. The car is manual-swapped, and the speedo had been running good up until recently.
My regular repair shop told me the VSS checks out OK, and I went over and redid the auto-to-manual conversion wiring bit myself (gauge cluster to TCM yellow pin, orange and b/w pins on the TCM connector) for a good measure - still no dice. Maybe it's the wiring harness between the VSS and the TCM connector, not sure how I would go about testing that without tools to jack the car up.

Been there, done that. I changed my NB1 manifold to NB2 while I had the transmission out of the car, which I got for really cheap because the EGR pipe had boogered up threads. So I had to buy a HUGE die off Amazon to try to repair the threads so that the new NB2 EGR pipe would bolt up. Whole bunch of waiting it seems like sometimes. But it worked and everything bolted up nicely.

All good now. turns out it was weak contact between the jumper cable and cluster PCB contact (1M). A quick glance at the PCB traces suggested 1M and 1N are shorted together, and 1N is in turn shorted to GND. Then I found this on the GRM forums
1M Yellow - (reference ground)
2M Orange - (signal output - AC Sine Wave)
2L Green / Red - to ECU (signal output - DC Square Wave)
So instead of trying to get the yellow cable to somehow mate with the unpopulated 1M pin, all you really need to do is to connected it to some reference ground on the cluster circuit. In fact there is a conviniently located phillips head screw labeled GND toward the bottom of the cluster. I just pinched (shorted) the yellow wire underneath the screw, didn't even that to solder once. Voila!

Re checked the codes from half a year ago (01+ header swap but was too lazy to plug second o2 sensor) just to see if there are any other codes besides the missing o2. Sure enough, there was a P0171 code. Pretty sure its been there since last year because I've been getting really bad MPG (22 MPG). Hopefully all that driving time didn't cause too much damage while running lean :) Does anyone know if a backed up stud from the exhaust manifold would cause an exhaust leak? I used an impact to get the old header out and one of the studs started unthreading a bit but I didn't bother with threading it back.

yes it can definitely leak. I had a broken stud on my Integra for years, until I pulled the engine out and could replace it. Saw plenty of black soot on the head around that area of the broken stud. Not sure if that would cause a P0171, though.

Looks about like how mine sat after installing ZetaCRD's. I left the rears untouched, but adjusted the front dampers up higher 6 turns. I'm not sure of the damper body's thread pitch so I don't really know how much actual length that added to the damper. I did 4 turns at first, still felt it a touch low in front, then did 2 more turns.

It sits at 11-3/4 front, 12-1/4 rear, I'm going to go up about an inch. Took it for a quick ride on a bumpy road no rubbing and feels tight. I did an eyeball adjustment to my toe but alignment is WAY off.

When I bought my car, it had some obvious repairs done to the rocker panels but it seemed to be done reasonably competently, so I left well enough alone. Fast forward 4 years and Im seeing some cracking and bubbling in the repairs (how does Bondo bubble??) so I decided to go in there with a flap disc and grinder and see how extensive it was. The bad news was that it was worse than I hoped; the good news is that there was some clean metal on both sides so it gave me something to weld to. In a couple of places, I found small pieces of sheet metal which werent welded or otherwise bonded in place just stuck behind rust-out and Bondo-ed over. I cut a piece of metal to cover the hole and welded it into place. My welding skills are just so-so and my equipment is cheap but eventually I can get a strong if ugly weld. The first picture is the hole after removing the Bondo and rusty metal, the second is my attempt at welding (I ran out of flux wire so its not finished yet) and the third is after grinding the welds and smearing my own Bondo over it. Fortunately I picked up some Tupperware for $40 at the junkyard and it covers the whole area. So my goal is just strength and some body filler over the burn throughs, a quick rattle can job spray over to prevent future rusting and cover it with the Tupperware.

Re-adjusted damping on the Tein Street Advance coilovers that came with my NB. There appears to be 30 clicks of adjustment range. When I first got the car they were set to full stiff. I lowered them down to about 6-8 clicks from full soft and had been running that way for about 3 months.
I thought that by doing this I was making the ride more comfortable and compliant, but what I really did was make the car extremely bouncy. So this morning I tried bringing the damping up to max again. Too stiff. Brought it down to 22/20 clicks and the ride feels GREAT. No bounciness but much more compliant than on max setting.
Also snapped a pic leaving the grocery store.

I have the same coilovers. The manual says not to exceed 16 clicks from full stiff, going further may cause damage. Seems like they should just put some kind of stop in there if it is really going to damage the shock.

It is rather peculiar. I dug up the manual online and expected everything to make sense, but it was even less intuitive than one could have imagined. Apparently Tein refers to the "full soft position" as position 16, and the "middle" position, 16 clicks over, as position zero. Like, honestly...

Yup, it was rusted. I was surprised because the car has been south of the Mason Dixon line its whole life and has hardly any visible rust. The rust didn't look too bad, but it was enough that bluing the gear with heat didn't persuade it.

On my way to work (warm afternoon), fully warmed up engine died a few times on decel. No CEL or other symptoms, but I managed to make it safely to work (~11km trip). Some 4-5 hours later I was ready to head back home, and the car would stall immediately unless I feather the throttle.
Popped the hood to run some quick checks:
No fluid buildup in the spark plug wells, air filter looked mostly clean, engine oil well within the F-L range, spark plug wires/IACV plug/TPS plug all intact.
IACV/TB were thoroughly cleaned early last winter (IACV bypass pathways and all).
Then as the last resort I reached in the bag of spare parts for a fresh TPS and replaced the current one with it - and thankfully that did the trick!
I've once had a similar problem few years back, where the root cause was tracked down to be the failing TPS. Started carrying spare rockauto TPS's since then. I guess that paid off for once :D
Engine still stumbled a bit to start, but ran strong for the remainder of my trip home, including a quick stop at a grocery store.
The earliest I can have my trusted mechanic check it out is next coming weekend. I will be keeping my eye on it.

Check the cup holder lids. The little piece of plastic that holds the spring on these lids is a common failure. Though I doubt the pinging sound would be that loud since it is a small spring.
For a spring that makes a louder pinging sound when it gets free, my guess is on the spring thats part of the seat hinge. Can you still recline both seats as normal?

Krylon Rust Tough Enamel Flat Black...it was the only black I had on the shelf. I didn't sand them but I did clean them with some alcohol then wrapped the rubber parts with tape and hit them with 3 coats. Quick and easy was the theme of the day, probably not long lasting but time will tell.

Yesterday I did the 2TWISTY oil flush, but I did some slight modifications.
First I put about 4 oz. of SeaFoam in the crankcase. then I drove to NAPA to pick up one quart 50W Valv Racing oil, which actually was on sale for $5.99, reg price about $9.98.
So I did about 20 mile warmup .
After draining oil and swapping filter with a Motorcraft FL816, I added 1 qt. 50W, 1 Qt. ATF, and 2 Qts. Marvel mystery oil. I idled car exactly one hour. After draining 2TWISTY concotion I did do the Kerosene 1 gallon flush
( purchased at WallyWorld for approx. $10.87 a gallon, and the MMO now $21.97 a gallon. )
After draining concotion I replaced Motorcraft FL816 with same.
Then I poured in one gallon Shell Rotella T6 15w40.
During the hour long idled I replaced missing wiper plug, and chrome knock out wiper plug with 2 Mazda OEM wiper arm plugs p/n LA01-67-395C $9.75 includes additional markup.
I also swapped out dark dome light lens with Mitsubishi clear lens p/n MR951527 $7.60.
I also noticed right front clearance bulb was out, so I changed that. I Was going to use 168 which is brighter, ( 4.9 watt ) but I worried a bit about lens heat so I used the regular 194 bulb ( 3.8 watt)

wait, what? You ran the engine with Kerosene in the crankcase??

See post 719. I welded in some metal plates to cover the holes. I'm feeling pretty good about this repair - feels a lot more solid now. It was kinda squishy before with all the fiberglass ands filler. I'll finish it off with some Bondo but it's going to get covered up eventually with some Tupperware I snagged at the Pick 'N' Pull.
what about all that rusted, rotted metal that was inside the exterior skin?

No, sorry.
For clarification, while filter was removed and drain plug was out, I poured through one gallon of kerosene.
Then I waited about 1/2 hour for it to completely drain and hopefully evaporate.

That's certainly a fair question! I wire brushed the inside metal to remove the surface rust, hit it with rust converter and then Rustoleum rusty metal primer. The pictures are "Before" shots and it looked a lot better after I got done with the above. I didn't pay a lot for the car and I knew it would never be an heirloom. My goal is to simply fight a slow retreat against the rust and who knows what will happen in the future? (Maybe the horse will sing  )

So if the Kersosene really needs to just run through all the oil galleries and drain straight out, it would be better to pour it over the valvetrain with the valve cover removed. If you just pour it into the oil filler cap, it'll only really touch that area of the head directly under the cap.

Yeah, that part confused me, too.

If you dumped a gallon in as fast as it would flow from a gallon jug without restriction, i bet it would fill the majority of the space under the valve cover quickly and for more than a moment. Now if you could snake a little high pressure sprayer in there....

Ive been playing whack-a-mole with my check engine light for the last 9 months or so. Every time I get one problem fixed, another pops up. The funny thing is that the light wouldnt stay constantly lit at any time it would stay on for while and then go off for a while. Rinse and repeat. It was especially prone to going on when I visited my daughter in Philadelphia, about a 30 mile drive. It became a bit of a joke in the family - every time I went to Philly someone would ask if the CEL went on and the answer was almost always yes.
After a while, I noticed that it tended to go on when I hit a large bump or pothole and I theorized that maybe a sensor or a wire (or heaven forbid, the ECU) was reacting to the shock. After I found and fixed a worn keyway in the crank which was causing all sorts of problems, the light went out and stayed out and I figured that was the end of it.
A few weeks ago while idly messing around with my Bluetooth OBD adaptor, I noticed that I was getting an error code for excessive EGR but no CEL was on. How could that be? It occurred to me that maybe the bulb was burned out and when I checked if it came on at startup to test the bulb, it didnt. Rats! Two things to fix.
So Im driving to visit my daughter last night after work and dodging Phillys Phamous Potholes and I hit one and the CEL came on! So did the lightbulb over my head! I realized that all this time, my codes hadnt been appearing and self-clearing they were probably permanent and the bulb must be loose or have a touchy filament and a good jolt would get it working for the time being. How do people who live in places with good roads diagnose these things?

While waiting for the good weather to get here so I can put the summer tires back on and hit the road, I decided to work on a couple of things that have been bugging me lately, the slow and slower speeds on my wipers and the slow power windows - especially my passenger side.
After reading a few posts, I elected to do the easy fixes first before I started dissembling anything. Most point to lubrication and ensuring that the contacts are clean so the motors are getting good power. I hit both the power connector to wiper motor and the power window switches with contact cleaner. Then I used T-9 on the wiper motor shaft as well as on all the the wiper linkages. I like T-9 as it cleaned a lot of old gunk off the linkages and it leaves behind a lubricant that doesn't attract dirt. The difference was amazing - I think this was how the wipers worked when the car was new.
I cleaned out the front channels on the windows by the sealed vent windows using rubbing alcohol and a small toothbrush. Then both channels got a hefty shot of heavy duty silicone spray. The driver's window also now operates like new. The passenger side is better, but still not as fast as the driver's side. I'll see if I can live with it longer before working up the motivation to pull off the door card.

Just realized I said TPS in my earlier post, but what I really meant to say was CPS (camshaft position sensor). Must have been a brain fart! Just making sure I am not spreading misinformation.
To reiterate, if you need to keep giving gas until the engine warms up to prevent it stalling and/or your engine suddenly quits on decel, check your CPS!

Sounds like you have a bad ground. Did you check the battery? Make sure it's tied down and the terminals are tight.

Driving home in the dark from work Tuesday morning, though I saw a black plastic bag blow across the highway, thought it went under the car. Driving to work Tuesday night noticed that the water temp was running about 10 to 15 degrees higher than normal. (205* to 210*)
Got to work and found that it wasn't a plastic bag stuck in the grille, but part of some ones plastic undertray wedged in the opening.

Drilled my oil pan for my turbo install. I drilled a bit too high and had clearance issues with the A/C compressor bracket. I made a cut to clear the new drain feed

Hey all, looking for quick bullet feedback on what must be changed.
2002 Miata, stock suspension, new tires Conti extreme contact 205/50r-15. Only mod are some beefed up sways front and rear.Attaching sheet, this is just a tire shop, $68 alignment, I had done with new tires. Its within specs but I have to assume the high front toe is going to toast my tires, and I dont much like the cross front numbers; camber caster toe all different left to right. Theyre going to adjust for free, but Im guessing not by much
Knowing they might have limitations at their shop knowledge wise , And they dont ballast, what would be your key like three or four changes as mandatory? Is there a certain figure on a certain corner you would adjust a little bit knowing theyre not ballasting ?
Thanks for passing along your wisdom

Friday took a nice ride up my local mountain road and some picks before heading back down. Got stuck behind an Acura TLX type s....ugh.
Today I decided to pull my calipers, paint them and add my new ss lines. While painting the calipers, off the car, I noticed the bleeder screw on my rear caliper was snapped off. This should be a fun repair. It's currently on jack stands. Noooooook
