Eagles Sign Evans PHILADELPHIA (P) Dick Evans, defensive line coach with the Cleveland Browns of the National Football league, has been signed to fill the same position with the Philadelphia -Eagles, it was announced yesterday by Coach Joe Wayne Bishop Freeman Friday, March 13, 1964 GREEN BAY, Wis. -Big Frank Howard, the Los Angeles Dodgers' "strong generally regarded as the mightiest hitter in baseball, is considering quitting the game at the age of 27 because of "personal problems." The 6 foot- 7 inch, 245- Howard indicated in a letter to Los Angeles GenFeral Manager Buzzie Bavasi that he was through with baseball.

However, Howard said at his Green Bay home yesterday he might stay in the game if his problems can be adjusted. Howard plans to go to the Dodgers! training camp at Vero Beach, Fla. and confer with Bavasi as soon as he clears up personal business. Bavasi said later he wants to meet with Howard his wife, presumably: at, Green Bay. Howard and Bavasi emphasized that money has nothing to do with the situation which is similar to that of Jackie Jensen, the Boston Red Sox outfielder who quit after the 1959 season, returned briefly in 1961 and then retired permanently.

Jensen said he wanted to spend more time with his family, but he also feared air travel. is a personal matter which I am not free to discuss," Howard told The Associated "I can't imagine how my letter to Mr. Bavasi leaked out." Howard, who. 000 from the Dodgers last season while collecting the fifth and final- installment on a $108,000 bonus given him after his graduation from Ohio: State, would to to Vero Beach to see Bavasi "as soon as I have taken care of some legalities here." "He has been good enough to consel me in the past and I hope that he will do so again," he said. "I do not even know myself what I will do.

There is a possibility might quit baseball, there's a chance I might not." Bavasi said earlier that Howard had informed him in a letter: "As you know, I have given this careful consideration and I regret to tell you I have decided to quit baseball. have found that money is not the cure to all ills. I have discussed this with my family and they realize, they will have to make sacrifices. But I know they, will be much happier me at home than to have me most of the time like I have. been." Howard" and his wife, the former Carole Johanski, have four children.

Howard, is employed in the off season as public relations representative for a Green Bay firm. He played for the old Green Bay Bluejays in- the Three I League in 1958. Soft spoken and so polite that he usually addresses visitors to the Dodger clubhouse as "sir," Howard's tremendous. strength has been the talk of the baseball world since he was brought up to the National league in. 1960.

His tape measure homers often appear ready to go into orbit, and some have been hit with only one hand on the bat as he takes a long stride and reaches for an outside pitch. Charles Dressen, now manager of the Detroit Tigers and a former coach with the Dodgers, has one way to de-. scribe Howard's strength. Says Dressen: "'Have a few pencils in your hand when you shake hands with him and you'll come out with a fistful of splinters." Although platooned, Howard: hit 28 homers in' 123 games last season. He also Jed the Dodgers in homers 1962 with-31, despite parttime duty.

Earlier this month, reports persisted that Howard was thinking of retiring because of his wife's illness. There were also reports he would like to be traded to the Mil- waukee Braves to be closer to home. Asked about the reports, Braves Pres. John MicHale said: "He would look good in our outfield. But there is nothing cooking and I don't believe we would be.

willing to give up what the Dodgers would want for him." Bavasi said yesterday that he and Howard "hadn't even discussed his contract for this year." And the Dodger front office boss said, "I wouldn't discuss a trade for Howard until this thing is settled."
