Baldur's Gate 3: How To Find & Use Icy Metal (3)

Icy metal is one of three lootable objects you must combine to make the Mourning Frost Quarterstaff. This Very Rare weapon is ideal for Wizards and other spell casters who focus on ice spells, as it inflicts Frostbite on enemies hit by the wielder's spells and cantrips. Frostbite causes the affected enemy to take an additional 1 Cold damage per stack of Frostbite remaining each time they take Cold Damage.

When one of the ingredients to Mourning Frost is in your inventory, you can right-click on it and then select Combine from the resulting menu.

Mourning Frost Crafting Ingredients

  • Icy Crystal
  • Icy Metal
  • Icy Helve

You can combine the Helve and the Crystal with the Icy Metal in any order to successfully craft the Mourning Frost Weapon.

Where To Find Icy Metal

Baldur's Gate 3: How To Find & Use Icy Metal (4)

Icy Metal is an item looted from the Drow body in the Myconid Colony Vault (X: 50, Y: -75). The contents of this vault are given as a reward for siding with either Glut or Spaw in Ebonlake Grotto and completing the tasks they set you. At the end of the quest, you can side with either of them, but you’ll want to side with Spaw in order to gain access to the corpse holding the Icy Metal.

Alternatively, you can skip all the busy work and bypass the Guardian Gate as soon as you’re in the camp. It's not possible to lockpick the gate, but you can get inside anyway by using Misty Step. You can find a video demonstrating how this works down below. If you don’t have access to the spell, speak with the traders in the camp or visit the merchants in the Druid Grove. One of them is bound to have a Scroll of Misty Step for sale.

Where To Find Icy Crystal

Baldur's Gate 3: How To Find & Use Icy Metal (6)

Icy Crystal is a drop from the Drow Filro the Forgotten near the Sussur Tree in the Underdark (X: -51, Y: -149). This combat features Filro, who is a caster, and several Hooked Horrors. While Filro becomes hostile on sight (and cannot be reasoned with), players can learn about the other two Drow who have parts of Mourning Frost by using Speak With Dead on his body.

While you’re in the area, make sure to examine the Sussur Tree carefully. This is where you’ll find the special tree bark needed to complete the Finish the Masterwork Weapon quest. There are a couple of other points of interest in the area, including a powerful Bulette, so make sure to explore thoroughly before moving on.

Where To Find Icy Helve

Baldur's Gate 3: How To Find & Use Icy Metal (8)

This rod of icy wood is located in the Western Underdark near the Selûnite Outpost and is carried by a petrified Drow Wizard named Dhourn (X: 114, Y: -252). Players must cure him of his petrification by using Basilisk Oil or by fighting the Spectator that wanders the area. Most encounters will result in Dhourn becoming hostile and being killed by the player, at which point the Icy Helve becomes lootable from his corpse.

This Spectator is just as strong as the one you can summon by using the Iron Flask, and things can easily turn sideways if you’re not prepared for it. Luckily, you can get some of the petrified Drow to help you during the battle. Any Drow you can remove the curse of petrification from will become a temporary ally, so make sure to bring several flasks of Basilisk Oil if you want to make things easier on yourself.

Alternatively, if the player character is a female Drow, they can speak with Dhourn. If you speak with Dhourn, the only way to get the Icy Helve is by pickpocketing him. If you plan to make Mourning Frost, make sure to do this before leaving the area (by walking away, fast traveling, or visiting camp), as this will cause Dhourn to despawn.
