Press Mission

The University of Virginia Press is the scholarly publishing division of the University of Virginia. The Press supports the academic mission of the University by publishing scholarship in a variety of print and digital formats that contributes to the progress of research and learning. We also actively seek works by scholars aimed at bringing the findings of a discipline to the well-educated reading public. Also important to our mission as part of a public university is the publication of works of regional interest to inform and engage the citizens of Virginia through guides to regional history, natural history, architecture, and culture. We seek to publish works of the highest quality that will bring positive recognition to the Press and the University.

Code of Conduct

Because a culture of equity and respect is vital to our publishing mission, the University of Virginia Press embraces a code of conduct that governs all of our collaborations, including staff, authors, reviewers, advisory boards, media, vendors, and other partners. The Press actively sustains a positive environment defined by constructive relationships, equity and inclusion, and mutual respect. We commit to holding challenging discussions of differences in a courteous, nonconfrontational manner and with respect to a diversity of viewpoints. The Press has zero tolerance for racism, sexism, hom*ophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, or any other form of discrimination or harassment, or for unethical professional conduct of any kind.

If you have encountered a violation of the code of conduct outlined above, please contact the Director of the Press at to discuss the matter. Incidents of discrimination, harassment, and other forms of abuse can also be reported to the University of Virginia’s Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights.

Land-use Acknowledgment

The University of Virginia Press is situated on the traditional lands of the Monacan Nation, and the Commonwealth of Virginia was and is home to many other Indigenous people. We pay our respect to all of them, past and present. We also honor the enslaved African and African American people who built the University of Virginia, and we recognize their descendants. We commit to fostering voices from these communities through our publications and to deepening our collective understanding of their histories and contributions.
